Here's a basic truth about us design types. We are listeners. If we don't listen we don't have a job. Because we need to fill a need. That's it, plain and simple. Some designers are lucky enough to be artists, building what suits them and having an audience of adoring fans who will wait breathlessly for your next release. But sadly, for the majority of us, we are here to fill a need.
And fill a need is what I did when I designed the Jack Bag. Named after the client (who I would love to tell you about but will reserve for the time that me and you met in person), I listened as he told me that as much as he liked the styles that I had to offer, he was looking for something that could accomplish x, y, and z for his life. Listening to what those things are, I realized that he wanted what I call a modern briefcase. You'll be discouraged to know that the modern briefcase is the computer bag that the tech company you worked for gave you back in 2010. And that's essentially this bag. Which leads me to another aspect of what I consider good design: if people are using it, it's good design. Even if the piece isn't so appealing, it might be because you're looking at it in a material that's not so great. So why not make the design in an amazing skin, done using craft (instead of assembly line). Now the item is a thing of beauty.
Form and function, dude. Both important.
