I was a designer for a big company in a past life. Making these one-off pieces are fun for me. I've spent years collecting fabrics from my world travels, and now I'm turning them into special pieces.
This is my take on the original 1930's Hawaiian shirt. I bought one from a friend who was a purveyor of vintage back in '94. I used it to create this pattern, and it's spot on.
The fabrics are two different silks that I found in Tokyo at an open flea market hidden behind a temple. The older man had baskets of kimono fabric rolls that were all incredible. I knew that I'd have a hard time finding so much great fabric again, so I bought almost everything he had. I had to buy an extra piece of luggage to get them back. The back yoke is made in vintage linen.
